POP!PEZ - PEZ PALS

O Boom mais recente que envolve a PEZ é sem dúvida a relação com iniciou em 2018 com a conhecida Funko, lançando nos icónicos stems da PEZ, cabeças Pop!. Para desagrado de alguns coleccionadores (confesso que estava neste lote), rejubilo de outros e ainda para alguns e como disse Fernando Pessoa, "Primeiro estranha-se, depois entranha-se" (creio estar agora nesta situação :-) ), o certo é que não podemos ficar indiferentes aos massivos lançamentos desta união, os quais incluem licenças nunca exploradas somente pela PEZ. Personagens de cereais, dos Masters Of The Universe, de séries de TV ou de vídeo-jogos, passando pelos fabulosos de Hanna-Barbera, os "vilões secundários" de Star Wars, heróis da Marvel e DC entre muitos outros incluindo clássicos PEZ Pals, os Pop!PEZ trazem ainda a particularidade das variações e edições limitadas a que estávamos habituados nos dispensadores PEZ, por vezes espaçados no tempo, se transformarem em versões limitadas denominadas de "Chase". Surgindo à velocidade quase da luz, é com insatisfação e creio que generalizada, que estes surjam apenas no mercado americano, deixando todos os outros coleccionadores PEZ mundiais, sujeitos à compra através de alguma plataforma online, ou de pedidos entre amigos com a mesma paixão pelo hobbie PEZ, agora também Pop!. A verdade é que um apaixonado pela PEZ, pode nem se interessar por coleccionar Pop!PEZ (por esse ou outro motivo), mas também é verdade que coleccionando apenas Pop!PEZ, já dará uma bela e apaixonada colecção. Com isto, e sendo notória alguma "baixa nas redes sociais" daquilo que são apenas notícias acerca dos dispensadores PEZ, iremos aqui, dar também destaque a esta relação PEZ / FUNKO, embora já tenhamos mencionado alguns, mas de forma pouco destacada.
Iniciando pelos clássicos PEZ Pals, a Funko realizou até ao momento 4 figuras, sendo que se destaca o PEZ Boy com cabelo azul. Esse dispensador, único exemplar conhecido com essa cor de cabelo e pertencente ao coleccionador americano Glenn Mendelson, passa a ser-lhe a uma homenagem quando a Funko, através do seu CEO Brian Mariotti (também este coleccionador PEZ), fabrica uma edição super-limitada "giveaway" de 100 exemplares. Seguem-se os dispensadores Pal do Bombeiro, Polícia e Rapaz com chapéu, cada um com versão normal e "chase". Existe ainda como variação na caixa com autocolante "funko-shop.com / Limited Edition", os três dispensadores "normais". Aqui deixamos os dispensadores Pop!PEZ! (Fotos Funko).

It's 5.0 time!!

First I'll talk about badges since the difference isn't too obvious and there only seems to be two popular styles.
An Austria or Hong Kong are semi-metallic while the USA is a dull grey. Along with being a dull grey, it also has more detail than the other. The lines above and below the 100 are much more defined and looking straight on, there is a figure that comes further down the oval portion. Other than this, they are very much the same.

Next we'll switch to the hat. USA and Austria are a rich blue, where the HK are a darker blue and sometimes purple. Textures are almost exactly the same and shape is identical from the outside.
Looking inside the hats is where you can see exactly where they are from.
USA will be smooth in the front where the badge comes through.
Austria will have two lines, one on each side of the badge.
HK has four lines, two on each side of the badge
3.9(some) will have the four lines and also will have a female hole instead of the standard peg. The dye used will also be found on the peg on the head which I find interesting and shows just how cheap HK pals were made. Inside these hats are a letter toward the rear of the hat, we are digging into this as we don't know exactly what this means and all that we've seen happen to have a different letter.

*FIREMAN PALS!*

Today I wanted to share with you all some differences between the Austria, Yugoslavia, USA and Hong Kong Fireman Pals. These are the most common and if you have one or 2 (or 23 like me, ha), chances are it is from one of these 4 countries of origin. I know what you guys are thinking; there is only a hat and moustache, how can they be different? That’s what I thought too, but there are actually many differences! Check it out:

Moustache: These moustaches look similar for the most part are actually quite different. The Yugoslavia moustache is significantly thinner than the rest and lack significant detail. Hong Kong, Austria and USA moustaches are all the same, right? Not quite! The Hong Kong moustaches has a glossy finish while the Austria/USA moustaches have a flatter/duller finish. Also, it appears that the Hong Kong moustache may have an additional line of detail on one side (see pic) where the Austria/USA moustache is smooth. The Austria and USA moustaches do not appear to have any differences.

Helmet Badge: There are basically 3 badges. The Austria and Hong Kong badges are dark gray and have a semi metallic finish. The USA badge is a medium gray with a flat/matte finish; it does not appear semi metallic like the Austria/Hong Kong badges. The Yugoslavia badges are a very light gray, also with a flat/matte finish.

Helmet: There are many differences between the helmets of the different Fireman Pals. First is a noticeable difference in the color of the Hong Kong helmets and the rest of the helmets. Sure, there can be many different shades of red on the helmets (this is due to age, exposure to sunlight/smoke/etc.) but generally they are approximately the same color with the exception of the Hong Kong helmets being quite a few shades darker than the rest. Second is the finish of the helmets. All the helmets have a fairly glossy finish but the USA helmet has a textured/rough finish. Additionally, the USA helmet is much thicker than the rest of the helmets. The pegs are also different between the helmets, even different between the 3.4 patent Hong Kong and 3.9 patent Hong Kong helmets! The 3.4 patent Hong Kong helmet peg is thinner and shorter than the 3.9 patent Hong Kong helmet. Both Hong Kong helmet pegs have a pointed tip. The Yugoslavia peg has a flat tip and the peg is very long and slightly tapered. The Peg on the USA and Austria helmets are similar; both have a rounded tip but the USA peg has a much thicker base than the Austria helmet.

Once again, if you see anything I have missed or if anything is totally wrong, PLEASE bring it up! Aaaand as usual, I hope you learned something and go check your Fireman Pals to see if you have all the correct parts! Till next time…

*SOMEONE CALL THE NURSE!*

Let's take a look at some of the unique differences between Austria/Yugoslavia Nurse Pals and USA Nurse Pals! Just like the last post, we will concentrate on these 3 beause they are the most commonly found and if you have a nurse in your collection, chances are it is from one of these 3 countries. Also, we will be just checking out the accessories today (hair and hat) and saving the stems and heads/etc. for another post :).

Hat: On the outside of the hat, the Austria/Yugoslavia hats have a distinct line that runs around the edge of the hat (see photo) while the USA hats are smooth along the edge. On the inside, the peg of the Austria/Yugoslavia hats are smooth and pointed on the end while the USA hat pegs are beveled and flat on the end.

Hair: On the outside of the hair piece, Austria/Yugoslavia hair is smooth in the middle. The USA hair has a distincive line that runs in the middle from the front all the way to the back. On the inside, the Austria/Yugoslavia peg is smooth with a pointed end and the USA peg is beveled with a flat end. Another thing noted on the inside is that on the Austria/Yugoslavia hair it is smooth inside but inside the USA hair, there are 2 bumps/nubs (I don't know what else to call them really, lol) that protrude out on either side of the peg. *If anyone knows what these are, let me know!*

*LET'S TALK DOCS!*

Let's explore some of the differences between the accessories of the USA Doctor Pals and the Austria/Yugoslavia Doctor Pals. These are the 3 most commonly found Doctor Pals and if you own one, it is most likely made in one of these 3 countries. This will cover the accessories, we can do stems/heads in another post since they apply to all the Pals and not just Doctors :).

Moustache: No differences to my knowledge.

Hair: No differences to my knowledge. However, note that 3.9 Patent Austria Doctors were known to come without hair!

Stethoscope: Austria/Yugoslavia stethoscopes have shorter pegs that attach to the neck hole while USA stethoscopes pegs are much longer. Austria/Yugoslavia are smooth on the diaphragm while USA stethoscopes have a distinctive line that runs across the diaphragm.

Headband: Austria/Yugoslavian headbands have a longer peg that is one thickness and a narrower band that goes across he top of the head. USA headbands have a shorter, beveled peg and the band that goes across the top of the head is wider.

Reflector: Austria/Yugoslavia reflectors are a darker, shiny, at metallic looking gray and have a distinctive line that goes approximately half way across it. USA reflectors are smooth with no line and their color is a light, dull, flat gray.

PEZ BOY VISITOR CENTER - 5 YEARS

O PEZ "Visitor Center" em Orange, Connecticut, nos EUA, o qual resumidamente partilha a história da empresa e expõe centenas de produtos "vintage" e recentes, incluindo dispensadores de Gatherings como o de Portugal 2014, onde se pode ver ao vivo parte do fabrico dos doces PEZ, assim como o seu embalamento e ainda comprar merchandising único e corrente, faz 5 anos, e trás com este feito o lançamento de um dispensador PEZ Boy em azul claro. Este PEZ, é limitado a 500 unidades e vendido apenas no centro, a 9.99 dólares, um por pessoa / dia com bilhete de admissão ao espaço. O intuito deste dispensador, é também o de apoio ao hole in the wall gang, uma organização sem fins lucrativos fundada em 1988 nos EUA, a qual faz acampamento para crianças com doenças crónicas, e terá como objectivo atingir os 5 mil dólares, de forma a ajudar a organização. Sem dúvida, este será um PEZ que brevemente atingirá valores altos em mercados paralelos, tais como o eBay ou espaços de vendas nas redes sociais. 

VARIAÇÕES DAS CABEÇAS PEZ PAL POR PAÍS

Da autoria de Ryan Rimmer (Silas Pez) > pezilla/pez-collectors, coleccionador e conhecedor experiente dos dispensadores PEZ Pals, e tendo surgido na comunidade Pezcommunity, algumas dúvidas sobre as variações destes, este realizou uma montagem com informação relevante e curiosa, que pode ajudar a definir as origens de fabricação. Segundo ele, as cabeças dos PEZ Pals derivam no molde, quer tenham sido produzidas na Jugoslávia, Áustria, Hong Kong (China), Espanha, EUA ou Brasil. A título de exemplo, as cabeças Made In Hong Kong têm bochechas parciais, ou entre outras, as de Jugoslávia têm um olhar mais "estranho". Veja a imagem e repare em outros interessantes detalhes.

PEZ PAL VARIATIONS (FACEBOOK PAGE)

Entre as inumeráveis páginas da comunidade PEZ Facebook que existem, há uma que se destaca pela qualidade de informação e fotografia, no que se refere às variações dos dispensadores PEZ Pals. Estes personagens surgiram pela primeira vez em 1965, com o "Boy with cap", o "Mexican" e o "Sailor" e desde aí foram realizadas outras figuras sempre com a mesma qualidade de desenho e sentido apelativo, através dos diversos objectos que os compõem. Esta página é mantida pelo coleccionador Ryan Rimmer (Silas Pez), o qual convida de forma educativa, os coleccionadores que queiram aprender e/ou contribuir para o conhecimento das variações PEZ Pals. Por curiosidade e dando algum seguimento a este tópico, no ano de 1998, a PEZ começa a comercializar uma "segunda vaga" deste projecto, através dos PEZ Pals remakes > pezilla/PALSREMAKES.

KNIGHT

PEZ Knight, o Cavaleiro com cabeça PEZ Pal. Este raro Dispensador surgiu em 1972 e em três diferentes versões nas cores da pluma e Stem - vermelha, preta e branca. Muito apreciado por coleccionadores PEZ, a sua cotação média no eBay ronda os 330 dólares para a versão vermelha, 430 para a preta e 530 na versão branca, embora consoante o estado e a vontade dos licitadores, já terá alcançado somas entre os 200 e os 900 dólares para a versão mais rara.
